A 2:1 casting epoxy for large pours such as river tables. EcoPoxy's data sheet gives a maximum of 38 mm (1.5 in) per pour, 8 to 12 hours of working time, and a 20 to 44 hour tacky window for the next layer.

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 1.5 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)1no wait (one pour)–
2 in (51 mm)2not calculated (see below)–
3 in (76 mm)220 h after the first, if the conditions below are met–
4 in (102 mm)3not calculated (see below)–

The published wait applies to a 1.5 in layer; your layers are 1 in. No schedule is calculated for a thickness the data sheet does not cover.

Only if these published conditions are met: pour next layer while previous layer is tacky to touch (no abrading needed); same 14 L / 38mm test casting at 21°C (70°F)

The published wait applies to a 1.5 in layer; your layers are 1.33 in. No schedule is calculated for a thickness the data sheet does not cover.

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Intended use

  • EcoPoxy positions FlowCast as a two-part casting epoxy for large castings such as live-edge river and ocean tables.TDS

Layering

  • If the previous layer is no longer tacky, wait roughly 72 hours, scuff with 220-grit sandpaper and clean with alcohol before the next pour.Page

Temperature

  • Pours thicker than 1.5 in and larger than 30 L need temperature monitoring and fans, switched on once the resin reaches 35°C.Instr.

Heat

  • The TDS reports a peak exotherm of 82°C (180°F) for a 1.5 kg casting and rates reactivity as low.TDS
  • Cured FlowCast has a DSC glass transition temperature of 42°C (108°F), above which it may deform under load.TDS

Other notes

  • The TDS lists a theoretical density of 1.07 g/cm3 (0.039 lb/in3) under cured resin properties, not as a mixed-liquid density.TDS
  • FlowCast cures very slowly in small volumes, and EcoPoxy recommends FlowCast SPR for small castings like trays or coasters.Page
  • Shelf life is two years unopened, with recommended storage at 15-25°C (59-77°F).TDS

UV and color

  • FlowCast contains UV stabilizers that eventually wear out, and finished projects should not be kept outdoors.Page

Surface preparation

  • Live edges should be seal-coated with UVPoxy first to stop air escaping from the wood and forming bubbles.Instr.

Safety data sheet summary

Signal word: DangerSDS B

Part A hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation
  • H319 Causes serious eye irritation
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction
  • H341 Suspected of causing genetic defects

Part B hazard statements

  • H318 Causes serious eye damage
  • H302 Harmful if swallowed
  • H312 Harmful in contact with skin
  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage

Protective equipment

  • Wear chemical-resistant, impervious gloves and inspect them before use.
  • Wear safety glasses or goggles for Part A.
  • For Part B, use safety glasses with side shields or goggles, consider a face shield against splashes, and wear full body protection.
  • Wear an approved respirator if engineering controls do not keep airborne concentrations below exposure limits.

Ventilation

  • Provide enough ventilation to keep vapor, mist and dust levels below workplace exposure limits, and have eyewash stations and safety showers nearby.
  • Part B should only be used with adequate ventilation.

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Specific gravity or density, Part A: 1.122 (TDS, specific gravity Part A at 22°C / 72°F, ASTM D1475) vs. Density 1.11 g/mL (SDS Part A section 9, rev. 12.15.2021) (TDS, SDS A). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Specific gravity or density, Part B: 0.978 (TDS, specific gravity Part B at 22°C / 72°F, ASTM D1475) vs. Density 0.9658 g/cm3 (20 °C) (SDS Part B section 9, rev. 05.10.2023) (TDS, SDS B). The table shows the value from the TDS.
