A 1:1 clear coating epoxy for tabletops and countertops. EcoPoxy's data sheet limits coats to 3.2 mm (1/8 in), gives 30 to 40 minutes of working time, and a 4 to 10 hour window for the next coat.

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 0.13 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)8not calculated (see below)–
2 in (51 mm)16not calculated (see below)–
3 in (76 mm)24not calculated (see below)–
4 in (102 mm)32not calculated (see below)–

The published wait applies to a 0.06 in layer; your layers are 1/8 in. No schedule is calculated for a thickness the data sheet does not cover.

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Intended use

  • UVPoxy is a 1:1 clear coating epoxy for tabletops, countertops, wood finishing and fluid art rather than for castings.Page

UV and color

  • It is formulated to resist yellowing from UV but EcoPoxy does not recommend it for permanent outdoor use.TDS

Layering

  • Coats thicker than 3.2 mm are not recommended because they cure too fast for bubbles to escape; build thickness with multiple layers instead.Page

Heat

  • The TDS lists a 100 g gel time of 45 minutes, a peak exotherm of 121°C (250°F) and 53 minutes to peak exotherm.TDS
  • Cured UVPoxy has a DSC glass transition temperature of 36°C (97°F).TDS

Other notes

  • The TDS gives a theoretical density of 1.07 g/cm3 (0.039 lb/in3) for the cured resin, not for the mixed liquid.TDS
  • UVPoxy should be mixed by hand with a stir stick; a power mixer is not advised because it whips in air.Page

Coverage

  • The guide sizes resin as length x width x thickness in inches (1/16 in for seal coats, 1/8 in for flood coats) times 16.387 for millilitres, plus 5-10%.Instr.

Surface preparation

  • EcoPoxy recommends a thin UVPoxy seal coat on every surface before the flood coat, and porous pieces may need 2-3 seal coats.Instr.

Safety data sheet summary

Signal word: DangerSDS B

Part A hazard statements

  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction

Part B hazard statements

  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
  • H318 Causes serious eye damage
  • H361 Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child
  • H335 May cause respiratory irritation

Protective equipment

  • Wear chemical-resistant, impervious gloves and inspect them before use.
  • Wear safety glasses or goggles for Part A.
  • For Part B, use safety glasses with side shields or goggles and consider a face shield against splashes.
  • Wear an approved respirator if engineering controls cannot keep airborne concentrations below exposure limits.

Ventilation

  • Use only with adequate ventilation that keeps vapor, mist and dust below workplace exposure limits.
  • Part B should likewise be used only with adequate ventilation.

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Specific gravity or density, Part A: 1.172 (TDS, specific gravity Part A at 22°C / 72°F, ASTM D1475) vs. Density 1.18 (SDS Part A section 9, no unit printed) (TDS, SDS A). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Specific gravity or density, Part B: 0.969 (TDS, specific gravity Part B at 22°C / 72°F, ASTM D1475) vs. Relative density 0.98 (water = 1); Density 8 lbs per gallon (SDS Part B section 9) (TDS, SDS B). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Time between pours: Add next layer while previous layer is tacky to touch, 4-10 hours (TDS, application guide, product-page application text) vs. Additional layers should be poured when the previous layer has reached set to touch, then scuffed (product-page FAQ) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
