Pouring
Maximum pour depth per layer3" thick in a single pourTDSTDS wording. The Instructions for Use separately give a general guideline of roughly 2–3 in per pour and say pouring over 3 in may cause yellowing, shrinking or cracking.
Minimum pour depthminimum recommended casting depth of 2" depending on your working conditionsPagedepending on working conditions; pours under 2 in take 48-72 hours to cure (instructions)
Maximum mass or volume per pourDo not mix more than 5 gallons at a time per mixing containerInstr.maximum mixing quantity per container; for larger projects mix multiple containers simultaneously

What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 3 in per pour. Worked out with the layer planner.

Total thicknessPoursEarliest start of last pourNotes
1 in (25 mm)1no wait (one pour)The total thickness is below the minimum pour thickness published for this product.
2 in (51 mm)1no wait (one pour)–
3 in (76 mm)1no wait (one pour)–
4 in (102 mm)224 h after the first, if the conditions below are metWith full layers first, the last layer would be thinner than the published minimum.

Only if these published conditions are met: each layer must harden and cool to room temperature (70-80°F) first; lightly scuff sand with 180 grit between coats

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Other notes

  • The TDS gives per-part liquid densities of 9.3 lbs/gal (resin) and 8.0 lbs/gal (hardener) at 25°C.TDS
  • Gel time is 22 hours for a 150 g mass and 17 hours for a 500 g mass at 25°C.TDS
  • Let the mixed epoxy stand 30-45 minutes at 60-80°F before pouring so mixing bubbles can escape.TDS
  • Cured density is published as 1.11 g/cm³ (cured solid, not mixed liquid).TDS

Layering

  • Each layer must harden and cool to room temperature (70-80°F) before the next, and should be lightly scuff-sanded with 180 grit.Instr.
  • Pours thinner than 2 in take 48-72 hours to cure, and pours over 3 in risk yellowing, shrinking or cracking.Instr.

Temperature

  • Thicker pours need cooler working conditions, and MAS recommends an air-conditioned workspace.Instr.
  • The product page says not to use Deep Pour X at working temperatures above 85°F.Page

Surface preparation

  • Seal bare wood with a faster MAS epoxy first; Deep Pour X is not recommended as a seal coat because it needs 2+ days before sanding.Instr.

Coverage

  • One mixed gallon yields about 235 cubic inches (about 25 in³ per mixed pound).Instr.

Heat

  • The TDS lists heat deflection temperatures of 121°F (room-temperature cure) and 115°F (post cure).TDS

Safety data sheet summary

Signal word: DangerSDS B

Part A hazard statements

  • H315 Causes skin irritation.
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction.
  • H319 Causes serious eye irritation.
  • H412 Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Part B hazard statements

  • H302 Harmful if swallowed.
  • H312 Harmful in contact with skin.
  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction.
  • H318 Causes serious eye damage.
  • H401 Toxic to aquatic life.
  • H411 Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Protective equipment

  • Wear impervious gloves such as butyl or nitrile rubber (resin and hardener SDS).
  • Wear chemical safety glasses or goggles.
  • If needed, use an approved respirator with organic vapour cartridges; supplied-air for higher exposures or emergencies.

Ventilation

  • Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep exposure low (both parts).

A summary, not the full SDS. Read the SDS for both parts before use and follow its first-aid section in case of exposure. This is not medical advice.

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Mix ratio by weight (A:B): 100A : 44B (TDS handling-properties table) vs. 100A:43B (TDS mixing instructions and Instructions for Use) (TDS, Instr.). The table shows the value from the TDS.
  • Working time: up to 1 hour to mix and pour 5 gallons or less at 60-80°F (Instructions for Use) vs. 12 hr working time (product page) (Instr., Page). The table shows the value from the Instr..
  • Full cure: fully cured in 5-7 days, 2-3" casting at 77°F (Instructions for Use) vs. 36 hr cure time (product page) (Instr., Page). The table shows the value from the Instr..
