What the numbers mean for a pour

Pours needed with a limit of 1/4 in per pour, the strictest of the limits the documents give. Worked out with the layer planner.

What the manufacturer says

Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.

Heat

  • Mixed epoxy left in the cup past its working time can heat to 200-300°F while curing.TDS
  • The TDS lists a heat deflection temperature of 118°F.TDS

Other notes

  • The TDS advises against mixing more than one gallon of epoxy at a time.TDS
  • Gel time is 72 minutes for a 150 g mass at 77°F.TDS
  • Cured density is published as 1.05 g/cm³ (cured solid, not mixed liquid).TDS
  • A drill mixer should not be used to mix TableTop.TDS
  • The product page advises gloves and good ventilation, or a respirator in confined spaces.Page

Temperature

  • Working above 80°F can make TableTop set too quickly and overheat, leading to yellowing, surface distortion or cracking.TDS

Layering

  • Coatings thicker than ¼ in are built from ¼ in layers with at least 3 hours of cure between coats.TDS

Surface preparation

  • Wood and other porous surfaces always need a seal coat before the flood coat.TDS

Coverage

  • A gallon kit covers about 6.4 sq ft at ¼ in thick.TDS

UV and color

  • Under extreme UV exposure a clear urethane or varnish top coat is recommended to prevent yellowing.TDS

Intended use

  • TotalBoat directs river tables and deep molds to step-pouring ¼ in layers or to a deep-pour epoxy instead.Page
  • TableTop is not formulated or recommended for floors.Page

Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree

  • Minimum cure for use: ready for light use in 48 hours (TDS cure section, ¼ in at 70°F) vs. Minimum Cure for Use: 3-5 days (TDS data table; product page FAQ also says 3-5 days) (TDS, Page).
