A 2:1 deep-pour epoxy. TotalBoat's data sheet limits river table and slab pours to 2 in per layer, allows up to 3 in for small castings, and asks for at least 36 hours between pours, or 24 hours once the previous layer is firm and below 85 °F.

| Maximum pour depth per layer | up to 3" per layer (casting in smaller mold, up to 1 mixed gallon); 2" for river tables and slab poursTDS3 in for casting in a smaller mold with up to 1 mixed gallon (absolute maximum); river tables/slab pours: do not exceed 2 in per pour. |
|---|---|
| Minimum pour depth | do not use for pours less than 1" in depthTDSfor best results; thinner pours extend the required cure time |
| Maximum mass or volume per pour | up to 1 mixed gallon (absolute maximum) for 3" casting poursTDScasting in a smaller mold poured up to 3 in deep |
| Recommended temperature | 60-80°FTDSapplication temperature; product, substrate and ambient air should all be within this range (0-80% RH); 70°F optimal for thicker pours |

| Time between pours | minimum of 36 hours (conservative); at least 24 hours if the previous layer is below 85°F and firmTDS36 h regardless of pour depth and ambient temperature; faster option: wait at least 24 h and confirm core temperature below 85°F with an IR thermometer |

What the numbers mean for a pour
Pours needed with a limit of 2 in per pour, the strictest of the limits the documents give. Worked out with the layer planner.
| Total thickness | Pours | Earliest start of last pour | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in (25 mm) | 1 | no wait (one pour) | – |
| 2 in (51 mm) | 1 | no wait (one pour) | – |
| 3 in (76 mm) | 2 | 36 h after the first, if the conditions below are met | – |
| 4 in (102 mm) | 2 | 36 h after the first, if the conditions below are met | – |
Only if these published conditions are met: 36 h regardless of pour depth and ambient temperature; faster option: wait at least 24 h and confirm core temperature below 85°F with an IR thermometer
What the manufacturer says
Paraphrased from the manufacturer’s documents.
Heat
- The cure is exothermic and a mass poured thicker than advised can reach 200-300°F or more.TDS
- Items hotter than 125°F should not be placed on the cured surface or it will distort and discolour.Page
Temperature
- For best results the curing mass should reach at least 90-120°F but stay below 180-200°F.TDS
- TotalBoat names 70°F as the optimal temperature for the thickest pours (castings to 3 in, slabs to 2 in).TDS
Layering
- Before the next pour, the previous layer should be below 85°F (measured at its centre with an infrared thermometer when using the 24-hour minimum) and firm enough not to distort.TDS
Surface preparation
- Porous wood must first be sealed with a thin skim coat of a faster epoxy, because Fathom cures too slowly to serve as the seal coat.TDS
Other notes
- The recommended minimum batch is half a gallon of mixed epoxy.TDS
- Let the mixed epoxy stand in the pail for 20-30 minutes before pouring so air bubbles can rise.TDS
- The TDS lists a resin density of 9.22 and a hardener density of 8.2 at 25°C without printing a unit, so these are not entered as specific gravity.TDS
- The TDS gives the cured density as 1.11 g/cm³ (cured, not mixed liquid).TDS
- The product page advises working in a well-ventilated area with gloves, eye, face and clothing protection.Page
Coverage
- The TDS gives coverage as 231 cubic inches per gallon of mixed Fathom.TDS
UV and color
- Fathom is not intended for continuous UV exposure; outdoor pieces should get a UV-stable varnish or clear coat.Page
Where the manufacturer’s documents disagree
- Full cure: 5-7 days (TDS) vs. 5-10 days (product page specifications and FAQ) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
- Hardness: 82 Shore D (TDS) vs. 83 Shore D (product page) (TDS, Page). The table shows the value from the TDS.
